Knowing your level of injury - Reeve Foundation Community

Knowing your level of injury - Reeve Foundation Community

Knowing your level of injury is important for your ability to communicate with health care professionals as well as to follow changes in your condition. The spine is composed of the bony vertebrae. Contained within those bones is the spinal cord. It is the level of injury of the spinal cord that establishes your diagnosis. A test called the ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) exam is performed by a trained health professional to establish the level of injury. You may recall having this test performed where the examiner touches your body with a pin and cotton swab at every level where each individual spinal nerve conducts sensation. The other part of the test is to have you move your body against gravity or without it. The lowest functioning nerve is the record for your injury.
